FUN WITH FERRIES

Today was a day of changing plans. We had planned to take the ferry out of Mallaig to the Isle of Skye yesterday, but there was nothing available. There was also nothing available for this morning. We looked at our options, and figured out a great route on some great roads out to and around Isle of Skye, that would have us back in Mallaig, Scotland tomorrow evening, which would allow us to go on some great roads tomorrow. We booked the ferry, and an Air BnB in Mallaig. Well, as usual, plans change.

We took a great route from Fort Williams to the Gleneig / Isle or Skye Ferry. I will talk about that ferry in a bit. Special Agent Nancy (SAN) hates ferries. She wanted to go on this one. THAT meant it must be unique. I will get to that in a bit.

The route was fantastic, great views and roads and a weird little ferry, the weather was fantastic, all the way to Sligachan on the Isle of Skye. We stopped for an afternoon snack, and the sky got angry. Plenty of rain, but more importantly, very high winds.. The weather radar was looking nasty until at least 6pm. Riding wet, twisty single track in rain and very high winds all day did not seem like a great idea. An added bonus was that the 2pm ferry had already canceled any motorcycle reservations due to high seas. It was highly likely that our 8pm ferry would be canceled. It was a 4 hour drive from the ferry to our hotel in the best of circumstances. Leaving Isle of Skye rather than riding to the ferry seemed like the best bet. This we did, and found a great route. A bonus is that we get to ride a great road twice.

Glenelg Isle of Skye Ferry

The Glenelg Isle of Skye Ferry is one of a kind. It is the only operating ferry that rotates by human power. It is fairly short, very small, but a fun trip. It does not really save anything over the nearby bridge but it is unique and the roads to and from it are fantastic. More importantly, Nak, the Ferry Dog is there to guard you from the nasty waves, running around the ferry barking at the waves. I suspect he would bark at you if you got out of hand as well.
